Seller Survey 2015 Results

The Seller Survey has become an annual Bonanza tradition. To wrap up the year following the holiday rush, we sent the 2015 year-in-review survey out to all of Bonanza's sellers. We received almost 25,000 responses to our questions, providing some very valuable feedback. 

Before we go any further, we wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who participated this year. These surveys help guide our efforts at the start of each year, and we pride ourselves on putting your input into practice.

Without any further ado... the results!

You like us, you really like us!

In response to the question "How likely are you to recommend Bonanza to friends?" over 75% of our sellers said they'd recommend Bonanza to their friends. That's a big deal. Word of mouth is hugely beneficial. People are more likely to use a product, see a movie, or visit a website like Bonanza and make a purchase if their friends and family tell them they had a great experience. We'll keep working on building that great experience, and you keep spreading the word about Bonanza. Please :)

Where you're coming from

In addition to Bonanza, the top four places our sellers sell their goods are:

  1. eBay
  2. Amazon
  3. Etsy
  4. Their own website

In case you didn't already know, Bonanza can help you manage your inventory across multiple patforms thanks to tools like the eBay and Amazon Inventory Sync, Etsy Importer, and CSV Inventory Importer. Importing and synching your items between all of these different channels is absolutely free on Bonanza.

And for those of you selling your goods on your own website, have you taken a look at Bonanza Webstores? When you sign up for a Bonanza Webstore membership, you pay no commission on all sales made through your Webstore.

The competition

We asked our sellers what they wished could be better about Amazon and eBay, because if we can't learn from others' mistakes, we'll be doomed to repeat them.

The number one complaint about both Amazon and eBay was that their fees were too high. We're pretty proud of our low, 3.5% fee on all standard sales. On top of that, there's no up-front cost to list your items on Bonanza. Opening a booth on Bonanza is 100% free. You only pay when you make a sale.

The next biggest gripe about the competition was that their customer service department left something to be desired. We feel like our support team at Bonanza is pretty special. We were voted the marketplace with the best communication by the Ecommerce Bytes seller survey in both 2014 and 2015. Those same years, our support team also placed in the top three for best customer support.

Putting our best foot forward

The top three things our sellers love about Bonanza are:

  1. Our easy inventory management.
  2. Item synchronization with other marketplaces.
  3. Great customer support - told you our support team was special :)

Who doesn't love getting a nice compliment? We are really proud of those three aspects of Bonanza, and we think we do them especially well. We're not one to rest on our laurels, though. There's always room for improvement, and we think we can make those three parts of Bonanza even better!

What the future holds

Speaking of making Bonanza even better, the final question on our survey was "If we could add one specific feature or fix one bug, what would it be?". We promised that someone would read EVERY result, and we followed through on that promise (thanks, Reilly!).

As always, your feedback helps us decide what features to add or change, and how important those features might be to you. Based on your input, we've put together a roadmap for the start of the year. Here's what we have on our plate for the first quarter of 2016.

  • Clarify "My Booth" vs "My Bonanza" navigation in header
  • Do a better job of identifying duplicate listings in sellers' booth
  • New "Add and Duplicate" button on the item listing form
  • Batch print order summaries for record keeping
  • Make it easier for sellers to separate active and inactive items in their booths
  • Make it more clear in the batch editor why an item is "incomplete"
  • Edit attributes in-place in the batch editor - currently in development
  • Do a better job of keeping inventory synched with eBay up to date - currently in development
  • Better item stats page - currently in development
  • Improve the Bonanza Sellers mobile app for both iOS and Android - currently in development
  • Better item description template imports - currently in development

I see you’re enrolled in all of our feed partners on your advertising page. If you haven’t already, you can read about some ways to maximize your traffic using our feed partners.

Another possible avenue for bringing in more traffic would be our new TurboTraffic Packs. On average, sellers are seeing a 300% increase in sales using TurboTraffic. You can purchase a single pack to give it a test run.

I just signed on to Bonanza hours ago and I’m disappointed in myself for not doing it sooner! I’ve been in Etsy and Ebay for seven years and share the concerns like everyone else.
So far everything I have heard and read about Bonanza is wonderful. It was easy to get started, totally understandable. I look forward to a great relationship with Bonanza.

We have just submitted a new update to it. The approval process for iOS apps can take up to a couple of weeks, so we can probably expect the latest version to be available at the end of next week.

A summary of the ratings: "Bonanza received a 5.78 in Profitability; a 6.2 in Customer Service; a 6.5 in Communication; and a 6.8 in Ease of Use. It received a 6.7 from sellers when asked, “How likely are you to recommend Bonanza as a selling venue to a friend or colleague?”" They were down in most areas.

It is great to hear how great Bonanza is doing. But just as a few have already have mentioned, sales are slow. What is Bonanza doing to bring in more traffic to their site. All the ideas you mentioned to corellegirl included spending more of her money to advertise. But how much is bonanza really spending on advertising themselves. I have yet to see a commercial on TV, or hear one on the radio about Bonanza. Also when I search for items on the internet, eBay and Amazon always come up, but not bonanza. Please help us by spending more on advertising yourselves which will in turn help all the Bonanza community. Thank you.

Bonanza is without doubt a terrific site and for ease of listing products it is second to none BUT on every occasion that I have dealt with seller support their response has been painfully slow – sometimes several days before getting a reply which is no help at all if you have a problem that needs a quick response. Having said that, they always dealt with my enquiries in a polite, professional and helpful way so no complaints there. Also, I have to agree with m8s4life in that Bonanza should be promoting the site MUCH more rather than making sellers upgrade their account and pay to get extra traffic. That’s like saying if you don’t upgrade we won’t send as much traffic your way…kind of demoralising if you’re on a tight budget. Surely it’s in Bonanza’s interest to make sure that all their sellers get as much traffic as possible as the more they sell, the more money Bonanza makes

In addition to PayPal and Amazon, Bonanza offers a Direct Checkout option. Buyers can pay you with their credit card without having to go through any other payment processor.

You are doing a pretty good job for the sellers on Bonanza. I know it’s not (yet) the go-to place for buyers but the cost of a national advertising promotion and still keeping our costs low is a tight-rope that is hard to walk. Word-of-mouth is still our biggest asset, but only if we use it. Still, I also know that you have to spend money to make money. There-in is the conflict. Keep cost low, profits per sale up and still sell merchandise. It’s a challenge. Thank you for a low-cost venue (to the seller). Our success is in our hands. Success is not a freebie, same as it is in a brick and mortar store.

I love Bonanza, how easy it is, nice look, low fees the only thing is I’d like to sell more I’m selling Avon on Amazon, Ebay and Bonanza and I’m on 9% fees level on Bonanza to advertise more – I have 7 items sold on Bonanza this month which is quite good but still not as good as on Amazon and Ebay… I have also vintage and warhammer things from my Etsy store

I appreciated being able to respond to the survey.
Bonanza has been great to work with so far. I look forward to growing right along with you. Hoping to open a Bonanza webstore soon. Just don’t want to waste time and other resources. Tried webstores on other platforms with abysmal results. I am really not clear on what the definite sales advantage would be, whether or not the webstore can be somewhat distinct from my Bonanza booth. For example, I would like the webstore to focus on one category versus multiple categories the way my booth does.

Currently, Bonanza Webstores use all of the same categories as your booth, but present your store as custom website featuring your own branding.

I opened my Bonanza back in November 2015. I’ve had no problem with sales, because I advertise the begeebus out of my items. That’s the only real way to be successful. Sitting around waiting for sales, is like hiding in a closet and hoping someone somewhere randomly brings you a pizza. It just doesn’t work that way… at least not very often.
What I’d like to see different on the Bonanza site is an ability and option to require certain payment methods such as paypal before a person can buy from you. ALso, being provided with an email address, and mailing address prior to sale is very helpful also. I know this may slow down the buying process for buyers, but it also weeds out the ones who impulse purchase, and do not follow through.
A clear method for selecting individual shipping costs to specific countries is very helpful too.
A little more customization wouldn’t hurt anything either, in regards to designing an individual website with a little more bling. Just a few ideas since I missed the survey.
Other than those few very key things, the site may be basic, but as such, it’s an awesome place to host your items! Thank you for the wonderful and speedy support which usually happens in less than 24 hours! You guys are great!

I’m one of the many who were long time sellers at ebay, (15 yrs), with no negative fb, never late with payments for my store and then it all fell apart last december when my husband had a heart attack and I was distracted between him and my 1700 plus items on ebay…I saw i had below standard ratings and called and was reassured that it would all be ok…and 2 days later was thrown out with permanent restrictions…I can only BUY there…I appealed with no change.
why am I writing to compliment you on your SELLER SURVEY RESULTS…because I read this at the bottom of the page..

when their buyers are happy, they’re happy and they continually sacrifice us without remorse…and I’m just thankful that I have Bonanza to come to and try to survive at…
thanks for reading my overly long message. At this time I’m developing a contact list with over 1000 of my buyers over the past 2 years..hopefully they’ll find there way here to Bonanza.
