These are a few of my favorite things...(UPDATED)

UPDATE: after hearing from many of you on the myriad of ways 'save for later' is being used we decided to keep the feature. More below in the comments.

Hello Bonanzlers! I’m writing to pre-announce a new feature coming soon to the site and a retirement party.

A retirement party? Yes. On occasion we retire features that get little usage. In this case we’re retiring the ‘save for later’ feature. Why? First off, very few people on the site use this feature. And keeping old features around that get little use makes the site more difficult to support and clutters the experience. Not to worry, we’re not going to remove the link to your existing saved items from your ‘My Bonanza’ page so your previously saved items aren’t lost.

On a related note we’ll soon be launching a new ‘Faves’ (as in 'favorite') feature to the site. Now buyers and merchants alike can easily ‘fave’ any item they like. We’re creating this new functionality to help ‘bubble-up’ interesting merchandise on the site for like-minded shoppers. Making an item as a fave will be similar to marking a booth as one of your favorites. We will update the look of the booth favorite experience to make them consistent. We’re working hard making the act of faving an item super simple.

I'll add another post with more details when we launch!

 - Alex

Kinda like a Like button?

chill02wolfart says: 06/13/11 at 11:42:24

Sounds really good, Alex! Personally, I never used “Save for Later”.

alexwberg says: 06/13/11 at 11:43:27

@momspennies – kinda, but kinda different.

Starfisher says: 06/13/11 at 12:00:09

I hate to see that feature go. When I am making an HPL I put the items into Saved for Later until I have enough items to work on creating the list. You can’t store them anywhere else. I also keep back ups in that file so that when an item sells from the HPL I can add another one in its place. Please reconsider. I’m sure many other HPL makers use this feature as well.

alexwberg says: 06/13/11 at 12:16:10

You should be able to save items in a draft HPL. Then you can publish the HPL (un-checking the draft box) when ready.

Starfisher says: 06/13/11 at 12:20:11

Alex,
The draft HPL doesn’t alway work. Many times it gets published even though you have it marked as a draft. Also if you save it as a draft, when you do publish it shows it was created at an earlier date and often ends up being published at the bottom of the page instead of the top. This is a feature that I have used for years and will hate to see it disappear.

momspennies says: 06/13/11 at 12:33:35

I never used it either…I always put things on my wish list and then when I didn’t need them anymore, I put them back on the shelf, so to speak. But I know others do use that feature.

alexwberg says: 06/13/11 at 13:10:14

@ Starfisher – if that’s the case then there’s a bug we should fix.

HPLs shouldn’t get published until you explicitly say they are ready. Can you bmail me a list where this has transpired if you know of one off-hand? That way I can chase it down and get this fixed properly. I can also look at how and when they are published (date and placement on the page). I suspect it’s publish date is being taken from the creation date and that’s why it’s towards the bottom in some instances.

sparklemotion says: 06/13/11 at 13:22:51

I have had the same problem as Starfisher when making HPLs where an unfinished list gets published even though it has been specified as a draft. Also, the list expiration is set from the time you start making it instead of when it is published (although I haven’t checked recently to see if that still happens).

alexwberg says: 06/13/11 at 13:27:33

@ sparklemotion – I’ll see what I can do about getting the expiration date and placement in the list determined by the publish date/time and not the creation of the draft.

sparklemotion says: 06/13/11 at 13:32:33

Thank you, alex! I wish I still had a list that I remember had this problem to offer as an example.

In any case, that issue is tangential to the the new “Fave” feature which seems like a cool idea.

momspennies says: 06/13/11 at 13:55:35

I had that problem with my Sowing The Seeds of Love List.

Starfisher says: 06/13/11 at 14:00:49

Alex,
Sorry but I can’t give you a specific HPL list. I don’t keep track of that. I just deal with it and move on. I’m sure you will find it has happened to many of the HPL list makers.

alexwberg says: 06/13/11 at 14:09:04

@starfisher – I’m looking into this now. No worries.

jacksplace says: 06/13/11 at 14:47:18

As always, super Bonanza support and they listen!

MiscClocks says: 06/13/11 at 15:02:02

I “fave” the new fave feature LOL

pieper says: 06/13/11 at 15:25:59

Yes, Alex – it has happened to me as well. I check it as a “draft” but when I go back in, apparently that box is no longer there for me to “uncheck” to make it go live. I only have three HPLs that I did recently and it happened on all of them.

TimeSpanTreasures says: 06/13/11 at 15:48:42

Alex, I also like the save feature, have used it for saving items I wanted to include in HPLs, as well as a place to keep track of items I would like to possibly buy for myself or as gifts. I’m really surprised to hear that not many use it-I think I have 25+ pages of saved items, lol.

I don’t have a problem with changing this to a faved feature, but is this going to be a private thing or a public thing? I do think we need a private area for marking items we would like to buy for gifts, etc.

And the HPL draft thing has not worked right for quite a while, I know I mentioned it to support. I check the box off to keep the HPL as a draft, and it doesn’t “take”. If I hit the edit button, and check the draft box again, THEN it usually sticks the second time.

And as Starfisher said, if you start an HPL and don’t finish it pretty quickly, it ends up down on the list of current HPLS, and not at the top. At one point, it did publish at the top, no matter when it was first started, but somewhere along the way, it changed.

And by the way, giant kudos to everyone involved in the tagging and token concept!

dollpassion_paris says: 06/13/11 at 16:36:32

I used the save feature a lot but it stopped working and my HPL’s would land up on page 6.

alexwberg says: 06/13/11 at 17:08:15

@ well, lots of you…

We found the bug relating to the save as draft feature. It will be fixed the next time we update the site – likely tomorrow night or Wednesday. Thanks all. Squashed it.

HOABobbies says: 06/13/11 at 17:17:48

I also hate to see it go with regard to making hpls for the exact reasons as Starfisher mentioned. Looking forward to the bug getting squashed with regard to the draft feature.

The other thing that I like about the “save for later” is that I can put items in there as a “wish list” or “favorite” WITHOUT the general PUBLIC knowing about it!
Sigh…

cshort0319 says: 06/13/11 at 17:19:34

when I did HPL’s and used the Favorite tag, I sometimes found that the seller would contact me and either offer me a discount or say thanks for thinking about buying this item.

Now, it’s a bit awkward to say, “I have no intention of buying this item.” (Especially this is true, when in my wildest dreams I wouldn’t take the item if the seller paid me — it just fits the theme of my HPL.)…………….

TimeSpanTreasures says: 06/13/11 at 17:29:32

Thanks for finding that bug with the HPL draft not sticking.

Regarding this fave feature, when we fave something, is it going to be public or private? It sounds like it is going to be public, from what you posted above, Alex, but I still think we need a private place to bookmark/save items.

richknobsales says: 06/13/11 at 17:52:59

I just did a HPL and I think it took off on its own as soon as I filled all the slots.

Indizona says: 06/13/11 at 18:17:24

I had those same problems with HPLs as mentioned above. I always use the save for later to save items for later. It’s like my watched items list in eBay, only better because they don’t expire. Since the wish list is public, I only use that for items I WISH I could buy, but won’t. If I find something that I want to buy for somebody else, I don’t want it in my wish list for everybody to be able to see, including the person I’m saving the item for til later.

TimeSpanTreasures says: 06/13/11 at 18:20:14

Well stated, Indizona.

HOABobbies says: 06/13/11 at 18:34:53

PRIVACY issues still need to be addressed here.

sewandsew says: 06/13/11 at 18:46:27

Is this the Save For Later on our Bonanza page or the listing one on the listing page?

I love the SFL on the listing page…..

TimeSpanTreasures says: 06/13/11 at 19:22:33

I think we are talking about the save for later on the bonanza page being retired, not the save for later on the listing page.

nightrunway says: 06/13/11 at 20:30:25

I’ve had this happen all the time making HPL (showing before I’m finished). My “work around” is, put 2 or 3 items in your list, then go back and check the save draft again. Then it will stay until your done. I use the Save For Later all the time.

EclecticStuff says: 06/14/11 at 00:30:40

NOooooo! I have used the Save For Later all the time in making HPL’s. Over 2 years! For all the reasons stated above. PLUS – I do not make an HPL in an hour or two on the same day. I have been “saving” items for the last 2 or better weeks for one I am planning. I search for items when I have the time and SAVE them. This is disaster and maybe the end of my making HPL’s for good. My lists would not even make the last page of “most recent” if the date they show as “created” continues to be the first date that items were amassed.

Plus, like Starfisher, I save back ups if something sells. Plus, I prefer to have the choices on “draft pages” to see how they go together, before I commit them.

Or, I see one or two great items and “save” them as seeds for a future HPL. Maybe get to it in a few days or weeks – OR work on several simultaneously as I come across the items that fit.

I had a terrible problem with the Do Not Publish on the last one I made. It would NOT publish, despite the fact that everyone could see it and 2 folks even commented on it BUT it would not publish. Had to do it all over again WITHOUT the “Save as Draft” checked.

That was supposed to have been fixed – but I am reading above that the “Save as Draft” is still wonky.

If I want an A+ list, I want to take my time to find the right items that meet several criteria, which also means checking factors that impact buyers like when was the last time a seller logged in – are there eNay logos or links – Too many negatives etc etc. This takes time. Being able to save items means I don’t have to do a slapdash job.

Rather than kill the feature – which is my favorite here – why not make it easier to delete items?? Why not just have a “delete” box to check to “un-save” rather than having to go to the listing to un-save it?? […which currently is tricky in that the item is no longer marked as saved on the listing like it used to be.]

Last, frankly I don’t get it. If the feature is allegedly underused, how can there be that many “saved” items to clutter up the site?
[My pages have been surreptitiously truncated by the powers that be anyway, which is fine since it is a pain to delete them. SEE suggestion above.]

Oh, and…
Yes the privacy issue is a real one, too. I didn’t realize until we had the new My Bonanza pages that anything I put in my wish list became known to the seller. I’d like to have a place to save items without the seller getting an announcement.

I wonder how many of the other list makers will be upset?
Not to mention those of us who would like to make a “Collection”?

By not being able to save and evaluate and taking the time necessary to do so [which is often over days – maybe even weeks] you will be lowering the quality of Collections as well as HPL’s. I’m a perfectionist when it comes to these and I know there are quite a few others who are also.

This is like taking the artist’s pallet away, handing him a brush and saying “go for it!”

Total bummer!
.

jNorthwestGale says: 06/14/11 at 00:58:08

It may or may not be a feature that’s widely used, but for those of us who regularly make HPLs, the Saved for later feature is an invaluable tool for storing the stash of items that catch our interest but don’t fit into the list we’re currently working on.

To arbitrarily take it away from us without a replacement seems like a very poor thank-you for all the time, work & thought that go into making quality HPLs that are worthy of being on the showcase ~ especially considering that every single bit of that time & talent is donated to this site entirely for free in the interest of making its front page truly special & noteworthy.

Why are these changes always made without allowing those who are affected to express their concerns before it’s already a done deal? It may be a lot easier to just announce decisions without inviting prior input, but it’s terrible public relations.

I know there has to be someone who makes final decisions, but there’s also something called a town meeting that’s worked very well in many communities for a long, long time, & that’s what I thought Bonanza was supposed to be all about ~ being a community ~ so why are we completely shut out of the process time & time again?

If you really are appreciative of the work we donate to the site, & if you feel you must eliminate the saved for later feature, how about showing your gratitude by creating a new virtual studio where we can go to create lists ~ that’s probably too much to hope for, but if you do, please, please do some communicating before implementing it, not after the fact.

ArtsnEnds says: 06/14/11 at 01:12:34

I am with Starfisher and eclecticstuff. Please don’t do it. It is the only way to make an outstanding list for an HPL.

Save as draft absolutely does not work all the time. But it is more than that. When I am cruising through lists looking for a certain color or name brand I loved to just pop them in the save for later. Then I could go and look at what I saved.

I also never put anything in a public wish list. If I was considering buying something it was on my Save for later list. It is no one’s business what I might buy.

I totally agree with EclecticStuff as to taking away your pallet. I would rather have that feature any day of the week than run around faving individual items.

The save for later feature was my favorite on Bonanza and I am going to be bitterly disappointed if you kill it. I suspect there are others who just have not seen this that feel the same way.

ArtsnEnds says: 06/14/11 at 01:16:17

NW Gale has also expressed my thoughts! Look at the lists she makes for Bonanza. They can’t be done without that feature. Please reconsider this decision. I think the more people that find out the more people that will be upset. I think you have underestimated this feature.

MiscLighting says: 06/14/11 at 01:20:56

Will buyers use the fave button so they can save, go and compare, research, and easily get back to the listing when ready to buy?

Frolicnymph says: 06/14/11 at 04:38:27

All of the reasons mentioned above to keep “Save For Later” are valid and I hope Bonanza will reconsider this decision. A “Favorite” list conjures up images of some who may use the feature in a “popularity” type of manner. Kind of like the “Booth favorite” feature was when it was first implemented. Bonanza finally put a limit on how many a person could fave and the issue was pretty much taken care of. Has there any been thought given toward the possibility of some who may just fave items to “bubble up” items as a personal popularity type thing?

BTW..Thanks to all of you who have so kindly done the HPL. I know it does take time, energy and thought. Bonanza Home page is always a pleasure to view.

inspired says: 06/14/11 at 05:03:34

I really love the ‘Save for Later’ feature, as I also save items I hope to purchase later. I for one will miss it. :(

Queenmum says: 06/14/11 at 05:25:51

Well Boyz & Girlz, I think ya made a misstep here.
Although I don’t use the SFL very much, I see all the reasons people do use it & must agree it’s a poor choice for the chopping block.
If & when I do use it, it’s on accounta I don’t want my lacies hung out in full public view.

If y’all want to “unclutter” the site, ditch some of the extraneous graphics that take forever to load,(I mean, come on, do we really need fancy frames and round corners?), dump the “dump & runners” and finally, get the things that don’t work fixed,(you know, “unimportant” little things like restoring some of the cats that have poofed, fixing search so buyers can actually find stuff..you know, stuff like that).

Just my not so humble, tongue in cheek, but seriously meant, opinion.

Starfisher says: 06/14/11 at 05:25:55

I am so glad to see so many people feel the same way I do. Eclectic Stuff and Northwest Gale have expressed it better than I could. I agree with everything said above. Please reconsider this decision.

Catnutti says: 06/14/11 at 09:08:23

I USED to make HPLs and I also used the Save for Later feature because it was easier to store items for future use.

But MAINLY because they WEREN’T seen by the public! I want an area where I can put items that aren’t viewed by anyone but ME.

And to that effect…will you PLEASE ANSWER IF THIS NEW FAVs WILL BE PRIVATE OR PUBLIC!? We need a place to put items that only WE get to see.

alexwberg says: 06/14/11 at 10:22:35

@MiscLighting – yes, merchants and shoppers alike can use the new faves feature as you describe.

chill02wolfart says: 06/14/11 at 10:23:48

Alex, when I stated earlier "Personally, I never used ‘Saved for Later’…I had no idea what it was used FOR. And also, how it affects the HPL Makers (as I’ve never made an HPL).

So, my opinion was most likely that of the minority. I didn’t know how essential it was to those who
create HPLs.

alexwberg says: 06/14/11 at 10:27:58

@everyone – a few items.

First off, we are listening. That’s why we posted this announcement before making any changes. We do want to hear your feedback. Really.

Second, we’ll have the bug on draft-mode for HPLs fixed very, very soon. I think it’s very likely that this will get addressed with a code update late this evening.

Third, after listening to your feedback and learning the myriad of ways the ‘save for later’ is being used, Bill and I decided to keep the feature. ; )

chill02wolfart says: 06/14/11 at 10:35:03

Alex, Thank You to you and Bill, for listening to the Feedback from your Customers!

Starfisher says: 06/14/11 at 11:05:32

Alex,
Thank you Bill and Alex for listening to us, it is great to know that our concerns are heard. I will be able to continue to enjoy making HPLs and having a place to store items privately. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

jNorthwestGale says: 06/14/11 at 11:16:25

wise decision!

driver211plus says: 06/14/11 at 11:21:31

Rats Alex. I liked the idea of us using wish list instead of save for later because I was hoping others would see it and buy the items for me.. LOL (cant knock a girl for trying)!

alexwberg says: 06/14/11 at 11:32:41

I had oldbaloo doing a ‘happy dance’ on my wishlist. Oh, look. I got one! ; )

Thank you Alex and Bill for listening to us and saving the Save!!!

HOABobbies says: 06/14/11 at 12:06:35

Much appreciated!

Now if we could just get the PRIVACY issues addressed regarding the FEEDBACK system, I would be doing the HAPPY DANCE!

froggieb says: 06/14/11 at 12:20:24

So glad to hear this! I too use the save for later list! @driver211plus, the wish list is visible to others if you are hoping for gifts!

HOABobbies says: 06/14/11 at 13:24:28

Just a thought with regard to the clutter issue….

How about getting rid of the “Saved item alerts”? I don’t really know what that is for unless it is to tell me that something in my SFL list has sold?

I never use the “Wish List” as well for reasons stated above, that it is not private and the seller is alerted when you put something into the list. Two features I personally could do without.

alexwberg says: 06/14/11 at 14:42:12

@HOABobbies – saved item alerts is for people who want to monitor new items in certain categories. Unless we are talking about different things.

The Wish list, by design, is public. ; )

TimeSpanTreasures says: 06/14/11 at 15:48:33

permacrisis says: 06/15/11 at 08:06:22

Alex- glad you saved Save For Later, for later
Keep in mind also, the political value this tool has for site promotion…

Naysayers who believe nothing sells here are often invited, by myself and others, to put favorite items into their Save For Later list, then come back in a couple weeks and see what’s left. Oftentimes it’s not much… it’s mostly been sold! You can’t put a price on that.

True, they could just as easily do this with their browser favorites, but then you wouldn’t have access to the data. (You are tracking that data… right?)

I think one place where ebay went wrong was, they were finely tuned in to all things financial on their site, but they let the most important data- the behavioral data of their heaviest users- fly right out the window.

robinscornernest says: 06/15/11 at 14:03:08

Hi to all. Well I am not a big user of the SFL but it does my heart good to see Bonanza listening to the voice of the people. This has been proven to me over & over. The Bonz team rules!!!!!!
