Item description
Vintage Mystery Postcard
Description: Image of a room with dining table and bench. The beautiful wooden panelled walls and door are elaborately carved with symbols such as the German eagle and the unicorn. Up in the corner is a Christian Crucifix. There is writing carved into the door, the words I can make out are Ausgefuhrt Jahre 1023 and the words Maria and Krain
After much research I found information about the Lokrum Benedictine Monastery of St. Mary, founded in 1023 in the area known as Krain, the German name for Carniola in Croatia. For much of this area's history it was in the posession of the Austro-Hungarian empire. This information seems to fit the carving on the door. I have not been able to locate any images of the interior of the monastery and can not attest to the accuracy of this identification. If anyone can confirm this or has other information I'd love for you to let me know.
Era/Style: RPPC Real Photo
