This is a densely documented, copiously indexed account of the first couple centuries of book publishing in North America. Tebbel describes all aspects of book publishing and other sectors of the publishing trade. It took a long time for the colonists, who became Americans, to give up their personal and cultural ties to book publishing and book selling in England. The first book published in North America was the Bay Psalm Book, produced on the first press (in Cambridge, MA) in 1640. Much of the earliest published work was religious texts.
