Hollyhocks have a deep tap root which means they're really good in drought conditions but don't transplant very well. Try to sow seed in their permanent home. Sometimes hollyhocks will do a abbreviated bloom at the end of their first season, but usually wait until their second season to do a full bloom. Some plants might go a 3rd or 4th year. Pretty much a carefree plant once established. Medium water once or twice a week if no rain. A little organic fertilizer every month or so will increase blooms.
