Additional Information
Husband-and-wife duo Les Paul and Mary Ford were prolific musical collaborators and among the most popular performers of the 1950s. Paul was not only a gifted musician but also a visionary inventor. His signature solid-body electric guitar, released in 1952 by the Gibson Guitar Corporation, became one of the most iconic instruments of the twentieth century. Revered for its tone, design, and versatility, the Les Paul guitar played a pivotal role in shaping numerous musical genres and remains one of the most sought-after models in the world of popular music.
Mary Ford, born in El Monte, California, was the daughter of a Nazarene minister. She began performing at an early age with her siblings on KPPC-AM, Pasadena's first Christian radio station. By 1945, she had become a popular western vocalist, and it was fellow cowboy singer Eddie Dean who introduced her to Les Paul. The two married and launched a highly successful recording and performance career that lasted until their tumultuous divorce in 1964. During this time, Paul also hosted a 15-minute radio program on NBC titled The Les Paul Show, where he and Ford, along with rhythm guitarist Eddie Stapleton, entertained audiences with music and humor.
This 1957 photograph of the pair captures them performing with the legendary Les Paul guitar, reflecting the spirit and style of post-war America-a period of cultural growth and prosperity. The image stands as a lasting tribute to their lively energy and groundbreaking innovation in music.
