Description
This is an authentic vintage Japanese postcard from the Showa era (1933-1945), featuring a beautiful watercolor illustration depicting traditional rickshaw pullers soliciting customers. The scene captures a fascinating glimpse into daily life in pre-war Japan, showing rickshaw operators in their distinctive red vests with Japanese characters (meaning "Fortune" and "Gold Now") that likely indicate their guild or company.
The postcard is part of the "East Asian Watercolor Customs" series, as indicated by the vertical Japanese text in the upper right corner. The illustration is signed by the artist Yamazaki, whose delicate watercolor technique beautifully renders this cultural scene with warm amber tones.
The reverse side features the standard "POST CARD" header with dividing line for message and address, along with the "Made in Japan" mark and Japanese characters. The card was never posted and remains in clean condition with no writing.
Historical Significance
This postcard dates from a significant period in Japanese history, either from the pre-war years or during World War II. During this time, rickshaws were still a common mode of transportation in Japanese cities, though they were gradually being replaced by more modern options. These postcards were popular souvenirs for foreign visitors and military personnel stationed in Japan and occupied territories.
