ENGLISH TRANSLATION
By Privilege of His Majesty, that only these Bills of Lading be used.
I declare,
I, Captain Joao Baptista Vieira, resident of this Island of Madeira,
who is named (may God protect her) Nossa Senhora da Nazare [the ship],
and which is presently moored and anchored in the port of this island,
that with God?s favor I will proceed on the voyage to the port of Lisbon,
where I am to discharge my cargo; and it is true that I have received
and have loaded in said ship, below deck, carefully arranged and well stowed,
Selected Gordon wine, boxes of wine,
shipped on account and at the risk of Parmenter, Montgomery Company.
Marked with the external mark by which I obligate and promise, God bringing me safely
to said port, to deliver in the name of the aforesaid to whomever belongs to Parmenter, Montgomery.
Paying me freight: twelve tostoes in Lisbon,
for which I bind my person and goods, and said vessel.
Of this I give four bills of lading of one tenor; signed by me or my clerk?
one valid, the others void.
Made in Faial(?), April 24, 1761.
Signed: [Captain?s signature]
