Item description
Attributed to the Ramses Wissa Wassef Workshop. This is an outstanding example of post-war Egyptian artisanry, influenced by the work of the great Ramses Wissa Wassef. Wassef was one of the most revered artisans in the Arab world in the 20th century. The playful stylization of nature is the chief hallmark of Wassef's work, along with the vibrant colors of the yarns.
This piece depicts a stylized "Tree of Life" with an intricate network of golden-brown roots, a strong trunk, and branches filled with autumn-toned leaves in shades of olive, rust, and ochre; surrounding and within the tree are various animals, each rendered in a flat, folk-art style with bold outlines and simple features.
