Item description
Antique Hand-Carved Polychrome Wooden Gouro Zauli Mask of the Ivory Coast
Measures 10 1/4" wide, 7" deep and 30" tall.
Traditional Guro masks are celebrated for their highly stylized, intricate craftsmanship and combinations of human, animal, and spirit imagery. This specific mask features several key attributes characteristic of Guro ceremonial art. The central human face is flanked by curved ram or antelope horns and flanked at the top by a prominent pair of elongated vertical horns. At the base, a downward-curving form acts like an elephant's trunk or stylized beak, creating a complex spiritual synthesis of animal powers. Perched directly on top of the head crest is a bird (often a hornbill or similar significant avian spirit), which serves as a traditional symbol of wisdom, connection to the spirit realm, or fertility. The use of distinct, bold colored pigments?including reds, greens, and ochres?and matching fiber details along the edges are common indicators of masks meant for celebratory, theatrical, or entertainment dances. In Guro culture, such complex multi-horned masks are often linked with specific masquerade traditions like the Zaouli or Zamble dances, which celebrate community identity, family lineages, and spiritual protection through energetic performance.
