Item description
RARE LOT SS UNITED STATES CABIN KEY AND FOB,
Two Security Box Keys, Bottle Opener, Post Card.
The SS UNITED STATES WAS COMMISSIONED IN 1949 and designed by GIBBS and launched in 1951-1952.
All American built and fireproof at a cost of $79 ($850 million today).
It was 990 feet long and 17 stories high, with 6 story stacks. It was a joint venture with the Navy/ Dept. of Defense. They footed $49 million.
The design of the keel and propellers was top secret. This prowess was incorporated, should the ship be needed during the Cold War as a rapid transport for 14,000 troops to Europe in 4 days.
The ship was capable of 38 knots. Unheard of for a HUGE vessel. It won and still holds the round trip record across the Atlantic to Belfast called the RIBAND AWARD SPEED RIBBON.
Amongst the luminaries who traveled on the ship included President Kennedy, Truman, Eisenhower. Also Salvatore Dali, Princess Grace, the Duke of Windsor and many Hollywood Celebrities.
In 1984 it was sent to Turkey and stripped of all Asbestos and the entire contents sold by Guernsey Auction in Norfolk, Va.
The Aluminum fob and brass Schlage key were to the cabin on B Deck, Cabin #55 . The fob is solid aluminum, clearly marked and shows normal wear. It unlocks a key to the past.
Also included are two cabin class Mossler keyed and aluminum fobs to Cabin Class Silver Rooms 93 and 94. Both in great condition. These were for the security boxes.
As a bonus is an original ship image and postcard dated FEB. 1962 sent by a couple from a stop on the Virgin Islands and extolling what a great time they were having ship board.
Another bonus is an original United States line bottle opener.
The ship languished since 1993, berthed at Pier 82 on Delaware ave in downtown Philadelphia opposite from Ikea and South of the Betsy Ross Bridge and almost opposite the famous Battleship New Jersey berthed in Camden.
The ship is currently owned by Okaloosa County- Florida. They paid the Conservancy $10,000,000 and will sink it in Florida to create the World's largest reef.
Okalossa will also have a land based museum for the ship to house memorabilia and movie films. This was a better option than scrapping.
These artifacts are becoming very rare. You can step back in time and savor a voyage. Who knows what famous person stayed in your cabin as I
mentioned earlier the SS UNITED STATES CONSERVANCY, headed by the original ships designer Gibbs? granddaughter failed in MANY attempts to repurpose the ship. At $1000/day docking fee there was just not enough funding.
These artifacts were purchased many years ago from a known
Collector Brian Minitree from Virginia. Who acquired them at the Guernsey auction.
The seller has a 5.0 rating and is #1 on GOOGLE FOR Motorola early DYNATAC Phones. Known for fast and expert packing. The seller has a keen eye for investment grade items.
