Item description
This is a finely made vintage sterling thimble from Mexico, crafted with hand tooling and decorative detail uncommon in later machine produced examples. The upper body is covered in traditional hand punched dimples for grip, while the lower edge features a scalloped skirt wrapped in raised scrollwork. The contrast between the utilitarian surface and the ornamental band gives the piece an appealing balance of function and artistic design.
Inside the thimble are the expected Mexican silver hallmarks including a maker?s initial JD. These are consistent with mid-century workshop production. The silver shows an even patina from age and handling. The piece has light surface wear but no structural issues, retaining its shape and decorative elements.
This type of thimble is collected both for sewing heritage and for its place in Mexican silver craft. The decorative skirt suggests it may have been intended as both a working tool and a small gift item, similar to the thimbles produced in Taxco during the twentieth century.
The design of it is indicative that it comes from the William Spratling school of Taxco silver and reflects the common stylistic choices made by his students.
