Item description
Vintage original 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the classic 1960's musical drama, I COULD GO ON SINGING, released in 1963 by United Artists and directed by Ronald Neame. Jenny Bowman (Judy Garland) is a successful singer who,
while on an engagement at the London Palladium, visits David Donne (Sir Dirk
Bogarde) to see her son Matt (Gregory Phillips) again, spending a few glorious
days with him while his father is away in Rome in an attempt to attain the
family that she never had. When David returns, Matt is torn between his loyalty
to his father and his affection for Jenny.
The image features a very close shot of singer Jenny Bowman (Judy Garland) having her throat examined by David Donne (Dirk Bogarde). It is in very fine- condition with light signs of wear on the bottom border and a few very small creases in the image area that are unobtrusive.
Originally, Judy Garland had recorded the tender
ballad "It Never Was You" (music by Kurt Weill, lyrics by Maxwell
Anderson) with full orchestral backing arranged and conducted by Mort
Lindsey. When filming on a mock-up of the London Palladium stage, Miss Garland
chose to sing live on the set, accompanied by just pianist Dave Lee. Capitol
Records, in 2006, released her initial version on a CD collection called
"The Essential Judy Garland". Her rendition used in this movie
has been brought back on the CD soundtrack from the Collectables label. Despite
the inordinately exaggerated reports of Judy Garland's constant lateness and
absence from shooting, this movie was completed on the set budget of $1.4
million. Filming was completed in twelve weeks from May to July 1962. Costume
Designer Edith Head was much criticized for the red dress Garland wears to sing "By Myself", but she insisted that she had not
designed it, nor been asked to approve it.
