Item description
Vintage First Draft copy script (not a vintage original script) for the popular 1980's dance-themed musical, A CHORUS LINE, released in 1985 by Columbia Pictures and directed by Richard Attenborough. Based upon the Broadway musical conceived by Michael Bennett, a director (Michael Douglas) is casting dancers for a large production. Large numbers of hopefuls audition, hoping to be selected. Throughout the day, more and more people are eliminated, and the competition gets harder. Eventually, approximately a dozen dancers must compete for a few spots, each hoping to impress the director with their dancing skill. But, is this really what the director is looking for?
Written by Joel Schumacher, this First Draft copy script is dated January 31, 1980 (Schumacher's draft wasn't used and the final screenplay was written by Arnold Schulman). It consists of 140 pages on white stock which were 3-hole punched and bound with two brass brads between a light blue plain cardstock front and back cover. It is complete in very fine condition without any missing pages, tears, stains, or other flaws and there are no handwritten notations present within.
Universal had the original film rights to the production and Mike Nichols worked on it for 6 months in 1978. The powers-that-be didn't like the screenplay and wouldn't agree to the $16 million budget so, Nichols quit. Sidney Lumet was then hired, but only lasted a few months. Richard Attenborough was eventually hired and filming started in October 1984. Attenborough wanted to cast only unknowns as the aspiring chorus members, and Audrey Landers was concerned that she was too well known from the TV series, Dallas (1978) to make the cut. Fortunately, Attenborough had never seen Dallas. Because of her dancing inexperience, Landers is generally not seen in wide shots of the entire cast dancing, but is inserted in close-ups. A dance double is clearly seen in long shots of "One".
