To save nickel for America's efforts during World War II, the U.S. Mint helped on the home front by striking these coins in 35% silver
These "silver nickels" were given large-size mint marks above Monticello on the reverse
Philadelphia Mint coins feature the first "P" mint marks in U.S. coinage history!
