Item description

OBVERSE Obverse legend : ANEPIGRAPHE. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND MARSEILLE (MASSILIA) (Seventh - eighth century) Childeric II abolished the coinage of gold in Gaul in favor of a mint of money. Workshop Marseille struck silver coins after the murder of Childeric II in 675 and probably until the beginning of the reign of Pepin the Short. The workshop was an important production whose only treasure of Nice-Cimiez has delivered a wide variety of types. Five patricians succeeded at the head of the city, Ansedertus, Nemfidius, Antenor, and Metranus Abbo. In 736 Provence was attached to the kingdom of France and Charles Martel ended the patricians. No copper production in Marseille seems attested. Without text, the dates of these patricians are not known.
