Item description

Vintage original 3.5 x 5.25 in. German postcard depicting the German silent film and sound era actor, CARL DE VOGT. He is depicted in a close publicity shot wearing a dark patterned shirt that matches his dark hair. It was signed boldly in black ink by Carl de Vogt in, we believe, 1926 (see "Provenance" below), the year in which he appeared in five silent films. Printed by the renowned Ross-Verlag company of Berlin, this vintage original postcard was unused and is in very fine condition with a light diagonal mark on each corner from where it was inserted into one of the two albums discussed below. There are no tears, stains, or other flaws. Silent Cinema Inc. (the seller here) guarantees the authenticity of Carl de Vogt's inscription and signature. Provenance: Approximately 8 years ago, we purchased a collection of two albums of vintage original German postcards from a rare book dealer at an antiquarian book fair in Pasadena, California (see photos). Approximately half of the postcards were signed by the respective personalities and the ones that were dated by the actors are all dated "1926." We were informed by the dealer that these photographs came from a film collector in Germany who acquired the postcards at the time they were issued and then had them signed by the respective actors when he met them in person. We are now pleased to make these vintage original postcards available to other collectors. Carl de Vogt (September 14, 1885 โ€“ February 16, 1970) was a German film actor who starred in four of Fritz Lang's early films. He attended the acting school in Cologne, Germany. Together with acting he was also active as a singer and recorded several discs. His greatest hit was Der Fremdenlegionรคr. His earliest ascertainable movie film is Schwert und Herd (1916). In the following years, he became established as a screen star in adventurous roles and attained lasting fame in the early works of Fritz Lang. To these film belong Halbblut (1919), Der Herr der Liebe (1919), and Die Spinnen (1919/20), where he played a character which reminded one of the later Indiana Jones. In 1919 and 1920, de Vogt starred in director Fritz Lang's two-part Spiders films opposite actresses Lil Dagover and Ressel Orla. In 1932, in the early sound era, he played the Prussian hero Major Schill in the big-budget historical film The Eleven Schill Officers. De Vogt was married to the German film actress Clรคre Lotto and the couple had a son, Karl Franz de Vogt (born May 14, 1917). Carl de Vogt died on February 16, 1970 in West Berlin, West Germany. Ross-Verlag in Berlin was a German publishing house specialized in photographs and photo postcards of artists. The owner of the company was Heinrich Ross (b. 10 August 1870; d. after 1954 as emigrant in the USA).
