CIRCA 1890?s, U.S. NAVY, OFFICERS SWORD BELT, SALTY, DISPLAYS CHARACTER
A belt with 5 horizontal gold striping and a latching gilt belt buckle with US Navy insignia. The belt has two cloth straps with clasps hanging from the left side: one shorter, one longer. These straps would have attached to a sword sheath.
One US Navy ornate brass buckle and clasp. The buckle is circular in shape with oak leaves along the rim. In the center is an eagle atop an anchor, surrounded by a ring of thirteen stars and six cannon balls. This example features the motif of a left facing winged eagle gripping an anchor in its talons. A wreath of leaves surrounds the center plate with crosses at top bottom and sides. Upon further inspection, the word ?GERMANY? is marked on the bar (See Image).
While the design of the buckle is distinctly American (U.S. Navy), it appears that at least part of its manufacturing was outsourced to Germany. This was not unheard of, even in the 19th century. Likely Post-Civil War: Given the clear and standardized "GERMANY" marking, it's more likely that this buckle dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. The McKinley Tariff Act of 1890 required imported goods to be marked with their country of origin, and this practice became more widespread in the following decades. While some earlier items might have had such markings, it was less common and less standardized.
So, to summarize: The buckle is of American design (U.S. Navy style), but at least part of it was manufactured in Germany, likely after the Civil War. This is a good example of how historical artifacts can have complex origins.
Displays honest use and age.
