Item description

The 38th President of the United States of America, Gerald R. Ford, is pictured here in his official White House portrait. This practice dates back to George Washington having his portrait painted by Gilbert Stuart. It remains one of the most celebrated traditions for the highest political office one can achieve in the United States. Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and served as Vice President for Richard Nixon before assuming the role of President following Nixon's resignation in the wake of the Watergate scandal, which exposed illegal surveillance ordered by Nixon on his rival Democrats. Ford is the only President to have held office without winning an election, and his bid for the Presidency was won by Jimmy Carter in the 1976 Presidential election. Ford went to the University of Michigan, where he played on the school's football team. While at Michigan, Ford's team was slated to play against Georgia Tech, with the latter pulling out of the scheduled game if Michigan played Willis Ward, a black man and Ford's best friend and roommate on road trips. Ford refused to play if the university consented, though at Ward's insistence, Ford would play against Georgia Tech. Gerald Ford's time in office was during a pivotal moment in the United States, both politically and culturally. The nation began to look back on the Vietnam War and the subsequent rise of underground cultures that eschewed the beliefs of their parent's generation and redefined society.
