Sumner County has a rich history and deep ties to the earliest part of United States history and is located on the northern border of Tennessee and Kentucky. The County was named after American Revolutionary War hero Jethro Sumner who was a senior officer in the Continental Army and led troops in numerous battles throughout North Carolina and Virginia. By the latter portions of the nineteenth century, the United States economy was growing, and demand for agricultural products had grown significantly, spurring growth and development throughout the region. Nashville was only twenty-five miles to the south and would become one of the most iconic southern American cities.
