Glover founded the Merchants Lithographing Company, and many of his works centered on the Northwestern United States and British Columbia. Named for Queen Victoria, the sitting monarch during the establishment of much of Canada, the town had grown from only three hundred settlers in the early portions of the nineteenth century to more than five thousand in a matter of days following the Gold Rush in 1858. As the Capital of British Columbia, Victoria supported a bustling trade industry through its port which bolstered the local economy. The island was unified with the mainland in 1866 and would remain a cultural center for British Columbia. With the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railroad, Vancouver superseded Victoria's role as the economic center to the south. Known for its rugged shoreline and numerous beaches, the city is also revered for its classic Edwardian architecture and traditional culture.
