Item description

Located on the Black River, Watertown New York is one of the most iconic cities in upstate New York. So-called for the numerous waterfalls found on the stretch of the river, numerous manufacturing and industrial operations were established in the city and led to periods of significant prosperity during the middle of the nineteenth century. The Black River flows towards Lake Ontarios some five miles west and remains an enduring feature of the local geography. By the late nineteenth century, the city was said to be home to more millionaires than any other per capita. First settled in 1800, the cityโ€™s first residents envisioned a town powered by the powerful flow of the Black River, and by 1816 it was officially incorporated as a village. This marked a period of significant growth, and immigrants from across Western Europe, Ireland, and the American South flocked to the town eager for opportunities in the plentiful factories, mills, and other manufacturing facilities. The first portable steam engine was created in Watertown in 1847 and marked a significant technological advance for the nation. The town's prosperity led to the establishment of public water systems and even a telephone line in 1879. Produced and published by one of the earliest pioneers of the style, this birds-eye perspective shows the town in one of its most prosperous eras during the so-called Gilded Age. As the nation neared the turn of the twentieth century, Watertown was a modern example of a thriving industrial hub. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
