Alice Paul was instrumental in getting the 19th Amendment ratified in 1919 and remains one of the most iconic figures in the women's rights movement, inspired by her predecessors like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucretia Mott. She was President of the National Woman's Party for five decades, and her commitment to peaceful protest helped become a central tenet of the later Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. When Tennessee, the 36th state, ratified the Amendment, suffragettes were successful in finally getting the Amendment passed nationally. This was a significant victory which Paul celebrated by unfurling their flag at their headquarters. However, their success came down to a single vote which was cast by a 24-year-old representative on the advice of his mother.
Paul earned a master's degree in sociology, political science, and economics and a law degree from the Washington School of Law at American University. Paul would later play a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and worked tirelessly throughout her career to fight for the equal treatment of women across America and the world. Paul remains an inspiration for those fighting for equality and fairness, and she is an iconic figure in the fight for women's right to vote and equality under federal law.
Paul, with Beth Crystal, also drafted language found in the equal rights amendment and was photographed with President Warren G. Harding and other members of the National Woman's Party in 1920 following the passage of the legislation.
