Some of the most iconic figures in the American Civil Rights movement are pictured here before an iconic rally at New York City's Madison Square Garden that remains one of the most memorable and recognized moments in the movement for the equality of people of color in the United States. Rosa Parks is credited with starting the non-violent protests in Montgomery, Alabama, after she refused to sit in the segregated section of the public buses, which would lead to some of the most public displays of protest across the United States in what would become one of the most significant periods of transformation in the nation as laws and regulations regarding segregation were removed across the South.
Also pictured here is Eleanor Roosevelt, who is credited with redefining the role of the First Lady with her pioneering work for human rights and other projects, which would lead to her successors finding humanitarian causes to champion as part of their role. Also featured here is Augustine Lucy,, who would become the first Black American woman to attend the University of Alabama in the same year as this photograph.
The nineteen fifties were a transformative time in the American Civil Rights movement following the conclusion of World War II and the Korean War as the United States neared yet another conflict that would polarize the nation with the Vietnam War. This photograph marks one of the most transformative moments in the United States as the culture, politics, and norms entered a modern era.
