Item description

In 1980, before performing at a Carter/Mondale campaign rally, this photograph captures First Lady Rosalynn Carter alongside the iconic country music artist Waylon Jennings and his wife and collaborator Jessi Colter. Jennings would become a prominent figure in the outlaw country musical movement of the nineteen seventies and, along with other artists like Willie Nelson, would redefine one of the most recognized genres for the following decades. His musical career began at the age of eight, and Colter became his wife in 1969 until his death in 2002. Rosalynn Carter was an advocate for numerous social causes, especially mental health. Rosalynn and her husband, President Jimmy Carter, helped expand and grow Habitat for Humanity which was formed in 1976 to provide housing for underserved communities. This meeting between Carter, Colter, and Jennings remains an iconic moment where these three influential personas were able to combine forces to help Jimmy Carter's campaign for reelection, which would ultimately succumb to California Republican politician and former actor Ronald Reagan in his 1981 presidential win. Jennings's influence at the time was considerable, and his work remains some of the most iconic in country music, and he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001 for his considerable contributions to both music and lyrics. This photograph is an authentic piece of American political history that provides a glimpse into what would go on to become one of the most recognized images from the era and memorialize the moment for decades to come.
