You are bidding on an Original Archdiocese of Durban Signed Letter to Joe DeRita! This item is being sold by a private collector and was acquired from his estate.
The letter is dated June 4, 1963 and was sent by Denis E. Hurley, Archdiocese of Durban at the time, thanking DeRita for his assistance with Hurley's Zulu Missions. It is a very warm, thankful letter. It is signed by Hurley at the bottom. The letter was originally folded and mailed. The reverse side shows DeRita's address as well as Hurley's.
100% ORIGINAL. NOT A COPY.
Denis Eugene Hurley O.M.I. (9 November 1915 โ 13 February 2004) was the South African Roman Catholic Vicar Apostolic of Natal and Bishop, and later Archbishop of Durban, from 1946 until 1992. He was born in Cape Town and spent his early years on Robben Island, where his father was the lighthouse keeper. In 1951, Hurley was appointed Archbishop of Durban and the youngest archbishop in the world at that time. Hurley was an active participant in the Second Vatican Council, which he described as "the greatest project of adult education ever held in the world". An outspoken opponent of apartheid, as chairman of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference, Hurley drafted the first of the ground-breaking pastoral letters in which the bishops denounced apartheid as "blasphemy" and "intrinsically evil." Upon his retirement as archbishop, he served as the Chancellor of the University of Natal.
Joe "Curly Joe" DeRita (July 12, 1909 โ July 3, 1993), born Joseph Wardell, was an American actor and comedian, who is best known for his stint as a member of the Three Stooges in the persona of "Curly Joe."
