Item description

15 oz hammer, 11 inches long with a 1 1/8 “ x 1 1/8 “ hammer face. The hammer face is cross hatched so minimal deflections when rapidly nailing lath or shingles. Also the face is flat unlike modern drywall hammers where you want the nail to be slightly embedded. The oak handle is solid, overall the hammer shows scuffing, chips and markings typical for it’s age and use. In general, the striking face drives the fasteners to secure the wooden lath to the structural timbers. The reverse side could be used to cut wood lath or wood shingles to size. In lathing and or shingling there are a lot of lath/shingles to install, meaning lots of nails and pieces to fit. The hammer had to be light weight. The “cutting” edge for lathing is blunt, if it was a sharp edge you would have to strike the lath hard diagonally and often the cut would be splintered. A blunt edge scores the wood and then the lather would pull and break it cleanly. This multi-purpose tool was designed for lathing, shingling, caulking, and perhaps sheathing install where a multiple of quick blows are needed to be efficient and productive over a long day.
