Item description
ABOUT THIS BOOK: Of all of the events of the Pacific War, none were more significant than the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7th, 1941. It shocked this nation into full awakeness and action.
"Remember Pear Harbor" became the watchword, as had "Remember The Alamo" during the days of Davey Crockett. This date was burned into the hearts of most schoolboys my age. Each of us alive then can recall where we were, and what they were doing when we heard the announcement of the attack.
Today, the younger generations fail to note the significance of the date or the name "Pearl Harbor". Our schools and history educators have failed to educate the youth of this great nation in the lessons of the Pacific War. It has been said that "He who forgets the lessons of the past are often bound to repeat them". To the Japanese, the attack was a success. Complete and total surprise was theirs that day. They could have done more damage. Japanese Admiral Nagumo was conservative. He feared the American carriers which were missing from Pearl Harbor and he ordered the fleet to retire after two waves were launched. The oil storage tank farm was safe and unhit during the attack. This would later prove to be a costly error. The sinking of the U.S. Navy battleship force brought the carrier to the forefront of battle. The U.S. carrier fleet was faster than the battleships and the new fast carrier task forces carried the war to the Japanese at greater speed than would have been possible with battleships of the line.
