Item description
This is a one-piece English Victorian silver plate biscuit box or tea caddy. I think it could also be used to hold potpourri or as a dresser "jar" to hold cotton balls for example. The lid is hinged and the tray or plate is attached to the body of the box. It sits on 3 bun feet. This biscuit box is round with a repousse' design of columns. This design is consistent on the body, the lid, and even the finial. The box is marked on the underside "Rowell Oxford" "H W Co L(td)" in a quatrefoil, and "10825". Rowell of Oxford is a historic jeweler and purveyor of objets d'art. Started in 1797, Rowell finally closed its doors in 2020. This biscuit box was originally retailed at Rowell. The mark H W Co L is, I believe, Horace Woodward Co Ltd. It began around 1850 in Birmingham England with London showrooms under a different name. It became Horace Woodward Co in 1865 and Horace Woodward Co. Ltd in 1893. In 1919 it was acquired by another silver company, Adie Bros. The number 10825 is, I believe, a pattern number. I did a hand polish of this item. There is still some tarnish. The lid hinge is firmly attached. I did not observe any dents, dings, or scratches. There are occasional small rub marks that I believe will polish out. The box measures approximately as follows.: 7 1/2" tall, tray 7 1/4" across, and body 5 " across. I am downsizing and am selling most everything. Non-smoking household.
