Jean Claude Novaro was born in 1943 in Antibes, France, and began studing the art of glass making at the age of 14 under Eloi Monod in Biot. By age 20 he was already considered a master. Novaro knew he had found his calling in life. He describes his relationship with glass as being "love at first sight," saying "I've never even thought of doing anything else." Novaro always works alone, with no assistants. His technique is one of studied intention, with each move completing a desired result. And the result is often breathtaking.
Novaro's unique style has become well known for its weight, depth and multiple layers of color with clear glass, an effect requiring exquisite talent. Novaro has often incorporated gold leaf into his glass. He even invented new techniques which he patented, such as painting between layers of glass, and was the first to incorporate luminescent elements.
In recognition of his outstanding talent, the French government honored Novaro by awarding him the "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres" (Knight of Arts and Humanities). Novaro's work has appeared at over 100 solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Signature pieces can be found in museums around the world, including France, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Australia, Japan, and the United States. His glass was given as a gift to representatives of all NATO countries at a recent summit. His pieces are well loved by many art connoisseurs world-wide, including Prince Albert II of Monaco, Sheikh Tariq Al Qassimi, Robert De Niro, Bill Cosby, Mike Tyson and Phillippe Monet. Jean-Claude is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the world's largest hand blown coupe. His accomplishments in the world of glass art are unparelleled, and his work is prized around the globe
