Item description
One of the most recognizable and iconic cities in New Jersey, Asbury Park bears a unique culture and remains one of Americaโs first beach resorts. First developed in 1871 as a residential retreat during the summer months, Asbury Park and grown and become one of the premier destinations on the American East Coast. Ocean Grove to the South encouraged the establishment of Asbury Park and promoted the city as an alcohol-free haven. The late nineteenth century saw the development of numerous grand hotels that would come to define the cities architecture and design. From its earliest years, more than half a million tourists visited Asbury Park attracted by the cool ocean water and convenient access from New York City and Philadelphia.
This birds-eye perspective bears a distinctive style that immediately transports the viewer back in time. These maps were widely popular during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and served to promote prominent civic features and attract residents and merchants alike. During the 1890s, numerous Victorian-style homes were constructed throughout the city and remain an enduring attraction to this day. By 1897 the city had flourished, and like the rest of the nation, was experiencing significant prosperity during the so-called Gilded Age.
The following decades would see the city expand its attraction, including the revitalization of the renowned boardwalk, the construction of the Paramount Theater, and the Convention Hall Complex. This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history with a celebrated style and classic, traditional aesthetic.
